10 steps to a happier life - it actually works!
Do nice things to others and stop brooding. It is possible to train to be happier, according to scientific findings. Here you get the happiness researchers' 10 best advice!
Can you train yourself in happiness? Yes, that's what happiness researchers think both in Sweden and abroad. An example is the large "happiness project" that was carried out at the University of Oxford in England.
It involved a number of people who were not depressed but were emotionally low. Their "happiness level" was measured both before and after the project and had increased significantly for most.
The American professor Sonja Lyubomirsky has summarized both others' and her own happiness research in her book The Tool of Happiness. Here is her best advice:
Practice being grateful for all that is good in life. For example, write a gratitude journal or express gratitude to people who mean something to you.
2. Become more optimistic!
Practice seeing the positive in yourself, others and in life. Try the writing exercise My best future, where you paint the best thing that can happen to you in different ways.
3. Stop brooding!
Practice stopping comparing yourself to others and dwelling on problems. You can have a fixed "ponder time" or write down the problems to make them concrete and easier to solve.
4. Do kind things!
Actively introduce more good deeds into your everyday life. Babysit a stressed parent, visit a lonely elderly person, hold the door, donate money, and more.
5. Harden it out!
Find ways to cope with stress, losses and setbacks. Everything from seeking support from friends and family to finding meaning in what happened and writing it down.
6. Nurture your relationships!
Happy people have close relationships with others. Often to family, but friends are just as good. Take time with your loved ones and show them appreciation.
7. Sorry!
Practice healing forgiveness. For example, write a letter describing how you were hurt and trying to understand why the person acted the way they did. (Does not need to be sent).
8. Find the flow!
Find activities that give you a sense of flow and presence. Maybe try yoga or mindfulness to learn how to relax and focus on the present.
9. Enjoy more!
Spend at least five minutes a day practicing enjoying everyday things like a hot shower or an evening walk. Relive great memories, celebrate happy events.
10. Set goals!
Having reasonable goals and being able to achieve them increases our well-being. Good goals can be trying a new activity, learning something new. Circle the goals that are important to you!
